At the recent CIPD Western region Gala Ball Colman Collins received the overall Contribution to / Innovation in HR in the Western Region Award 2015 which was kindly sponsored by Careerwise Recruitment.
Colman Collins was commended for his outstanding Contribution to HR in the Western Region throughout his career as a HR Manager/Director within Multinational organisations right through to making a leap into the unknown but following his own personal vision to establish a successful and highly respected Recruitment & HR Services company providing solutions and long term partnerships to many companies both in the Western Region and right across the country. His energy, commitment and drive to promote true HR and driving the success of the CIPD Western Region was recognised making him a very worthy recipient of this award.
Colman Collins was one of the founders of Collins McNicholas along with Val McNicholas and opened the doors in 1990 then situated in the Crescent, Galway and has held the role of Managing Director over the past 24 years. Subsequently he was Assistant HR Manager in Thermo King in Galway, Manager of Westinghouse and held the post of HR Director of Nortel Networks. In 1995 he was the Chairperson of the CIPD for the Western Region and served on the National Executive committee bringing the voice of the western region to the Executive table and ensuring the western region concerns and issues were discussed and solutions received. Colman displayed Innovation, Vision and Purpose by establishing the first HR Consultancy in Galway and progressively expanded to Dublin, Cork, Sligo and Athlone in providing a comprehensive One Stop Shop for HR Professional Services to MNCs coming to Ireland.
As Colman believed that HR practitioners should be qualified professionals he was involved in bringing CIPD to the Western Region and building on the success of the region over the years as a long serving member of the committee and taking on the role ofChairperson to build awareness about the institute in the region and build on the membership numbers at the time. He initiated the CMCN sponsorship of the CIPD Diploma/Degree course in 1992 and has maintained it to date over 20 years.
Colman has outstanding judgement and understands the requirements of his fellow HR practitioners and client companies which has been evident in his work with a range of companies across small to medium indigenous to large multinational companies and has built lasting relationships with companies who were at a sensitive stage of start-up mode ensuring confidentiality and integrity at all times in his dealings with the companies and relevant supporting networks.
Colman has created a team environment within Collins McNicholas growing people organically within the workplace promoting a number of employees over the years to Regional Manager roles and recently facilitated a MBO of the company which is now led by Niall Murray (now the Group Managing Director), Antoinette O’Flaherty (Director), and here in Galway Michelle Murphy (Director) who originally took over as Regional Manager from Colman in 2007. The encouragement, support and autonomy afforded to those in the management roles within the organisation has been second to none and this it is testament to his character to allow people to develop and grow with an excellent support structure in place.
Colman has built teams of professionals in each of its office locations around the country with a large number of its team members remaining loyal to the company for periods exceeding 14 years + which is not the norm in an industry which is known for high turnover. The teams are also encouraged to continue their education with the CIPD qualification being the preferred qualification for the Recruitment Consultants to achieve and on an annual basis Colman ensures all membership levels are renewed to ensure no lapses in membership for the employees of Collins McNicholas.
In spite of the recession etc… Colman’s Recruitment and HR Services Businesses have survived and prospered for 25 years while many competitors have had to close shop. This is the ultimate confirmation of what his colleagues in HR and allied clients have done because they have a belief and trust in Colman and his integrity as a professional HR ambassador. Colman has developed a company with a mission and deep values which mirror the very core of what he stands for as a person and would accept nothing less. These very values are among the key competencies delivered by Colman Collins during all aspects of his career and he has instilled these core values within the organisation always practicing a top down approach and ensuring full buy in from his employees.
